Denim, with its characteristics of "100% cotton, thick, and prone to fading,"
may strongly evoke an image of workwear for some.
However, today's Kurashiki Kojima denim is more than just that.
Over a long period, it has continuously evolved into a textile that suits Japan's climate and fits the Japanese body.
Among these innovations, "silk denim" was born, incorporating "silk," a traditional Japanese industry.
Our Kurashiki Wa-DENIM Kimono mainly uses "silk denim" fabric.
We used that fabric to create this apron.
I thought that by making it an apron, even those who feel kimonos are too formal,
could experience the texture and feel of this silk denim fabric, regardless of gender.
Silk denim fabric is very difficult to manufacture.
Let me tell you a little about its characteristics.
Silk denim fabric uses cotton for the warp threads and silk for the weft threads.
This fabric has three main characteristics:
1. Cotton warp threads
2. Silk weft threads
3. Dyeing
First, regarding 1.:
Normally, cotton used for denim has a thick, single thread for the warp.
However, this fabric uses high-quality threads made by twisting three ultra-fine warp threads together.
The purpose of this is:
By combining fine threads, the thread itself emits a luster, gives the fabric thickness, and creates suppleness.
However, creating high-quality ultra-fine threads requires significantly more preparation than regular threads.
Normally, this method of production is not used.
Naturally, it also incurs higher costs.
Preparing warp threads is a laborious process in textile production.
Adding the steps of twisting fine threads and dyeing the threads makes it, to be honest, a thread that cannot be easily produced.
Next, regarding 2., the weft thread:
"Using silk for the weft thread"
This inherently increases the difficulty of weaving.
Plant-based warp threads and animal-based weft threads.
The materials are completely different.
Moreover, if it's a high-density weave, the difficulty increases further.
Since the luster is a characteristic of this silk denim fabric, it is essential to weave it beautifully.
Therefore, it needs to be woven carefully and slowly.
If the loom is out of adjustment, defects become easily noticeable, and not everyone can make those adjustments. Repairs are the job of skilled craftsmen.
To maintain a certain level of quality, years of weaving technique and skilled artisans familiar with the settings are required.
Regarding 3., dyeing:
When it comes to denim, it's "indigo dye."
However, the problems of fading and color transfer are unavoidable.
Therefore, we developed reactive dyeing for threads, which maintains the look and feel of denim without these issues, and brought it to market.
For sumi (ink) color, sulfur dye is used.
This fabric allows for:
・Hand washing at home
・Ironing, despite being silk
Silk denim, with its luxurious texture and easy care.
We sincerely hope that your daily life will become even more refined.
