【A Message from the Owner】
Thank you for visiting our website from among the many available.
Many people may associate denim with characteristics like "100% cotton, thick, and prone to fading,"
giving it a strong image as workwear.
However, today's Kurashiki Kojima denim is more than that.
Over a long period, it has continuously evolved into a fabric that suits the Japanese climate and fits the Japanese body.
In this process, "silk denim" was born, incorporating "silk," a traditional Japanese industry.
Our main Kurashiki WA-DENIM kimonos use "silk denim" fabric.
We've used that same fabric to create this apron.
We thought that by making an apron, people who feel that kimonos are too formal,
regardless of gender, could experience the texture and feel of this silk denim fabric.
Silk denim fabric is extremely difficult to produce.
Allow me to explain some of its characteristics.
Silk denim fabric uses cotton for the warp threads and silk for the weft threads.
This fabric has three major characteristics:
1. The cotton warp threads
2. The silk weft threads
3. The dyeing process
First, regarding 1.,
normally, thick single cotton threads are used for the warp in denim.
However, this fabric uses high-quality yarn made by twisting three extremely fine warp threads together.
The purpose of this is:
By combining fine threads, the yarn itself shines, giving the fabric thickness and creating suppleness.
However, the process of creating high-quality, ultra-fine yarn takes considerably more preparation than regular yarn.
This kind of manufacturing method is not typically used.
Naturally, it also incurs higher costs.
Preparing warp threads is a laborious process in weaving.
Adding the steps of twisting fine threads and dyeing the yarn makes it, frankly, a thread that cannot be easily produced.
Next, regarding 2., the weft thread,
"using silk for the weft thread"
This inherently increases the difficulty of weaving.
Plant-based fiber for the warp, animal-based fiber for the weft.
The materials are completely different.
Furthermore, if it's a high-density weave, the difficulty increases even more.
Since the luster is a key feature of this silk denim fabric, it is essential to weave it beautifully.
Therefore, it requires careful and time-consuming weaving.
If the loom goes out of adjustment, defects become easily noticeable, and not everyone can make the necessary adjustments. Rectification is the work of skilled artisans.
To maintain a certain level of quality, long years of weaving expertise and skilled craftsmen familiar with the settings are required.
Regarding 3., the dyeing process,
Denim is synonymous with "indigo dye."
However, the issues of color fading and color transfer are unavoidable.
Therefore, we developed a reactive dye for yarn dyeing that maintains the look and feel of denim, and incorporated it into our products.
For sumi (ink) color, we use sulfur dye.
This fabric allows for:
・Hand washing at home
・Ironing, despite being silk
Silk denim, with its luxurious texture and easy care.
We sincerely hope that your daily life will become even more refined.
