What is Tatami-beri (Tatami border)?
Tatami-beri refers to the fabric used to decorate the long edges (fuchi) of tatami mats. Tatami mats themselves are an essential element of Japanese-style homes, and tatami-beri, which adorns their edges, is also very important.
In the past, it was an important decoration that showed the dignity of the house and the status of the owner.

The Origin of Tatami
During the Heian period, tatami mats were introduced into the homes of aristocrats and the upper class. At that time, tatami mats did not cover the entire floor as they do today, but were portable mats used as beds or seats.
Around the same time, tatami-beri also began to be used. In particularly prestigious homes, tatami borders adorned with silk or expensive fabrics were used.
Tatami mats not only enhanced the presence of important people in the house, but also served as a symbolic representation of wealth and status.

The Spread of Tatami and Tatami-beri
In the Edo period, tatami mats became popular even in common households.
The colors and patterns of tatami-beri also became abundant, making them affordable for the general public.

However, after the Meiji era, Western-style architecture influenced Japanese homes, and their numbers increased.
In proportion to this, the demand for Japanese-style rooms decreased, and the use of both tatami mats and tatami-beri in architecture declined.

Nevertheless, the tradition of tatami and tatami-beri is still firmly preserved today.
This is because tatami-beri has begun to be incorporated as a new material with a fresh sensibility into everyday items such as bags and accessories, as well as clothing, particularly Japanese sashes (obi).
Tatami-beri in various colors, patterns, and materials have also emerged, catering to an increasingly diverse range of needs.

The Future of Tatami-beri
Tatami-beri has far transcended its role as a Japanese room decoration and has become a material active in the fashion and interior design fields.
This is because items such as obi and bags made from tatami-beri are not only appealing for their unique designs and interesting materials but also for their durability.
